East Texas ballooning pioneer gives back to sport he loves
“I have had a lot of fun,” Bussey said. “I’ve been all over the world because of ballooning; first balloon to fly in Malaysia as the guest of the Sultan … flown in Japan, Canada, Mexico, the Carribean, Switzerland, England.”
The sport even landed him an actor’s credit as ‘Older Balloon Pilot’ on a 1997 episode of “Walker, Texas Ranger,” where the titular kung fu cowboy cop, played by Chuck Norris, jumped from Bussey’s balloon on top of the bad guy’s balloon, climbed down the rigging and slugged it out with the villian, eventually landing the balloon.
In reality, Chuck Norris’ stunt double, Kinnie Gibson, jumped from the balloon and quickly pulled his parachute, which was later edited with studio footage. Gibson was a good friend of Bussey’s and well known to Longview balloonists. Gibson and Bussey met through ballooning, and Gibson initially asked him if he wanted to be on the show.
“We took off and ‘brought’ the balloon back to the same place,” Bussey said with a smile. “You can’t do that. It was kind of a hokey thing … I was paid a reasonable amount of money for it and I still get dividends.”
Longview balloon pilot who died Thursday was 'larger than life'
A flight plan that took Kinnie Gibson past pyramids and celebrities landed early Thursday, less than a week before the balloon race that drew him here to join the local pilot community he loved.
Gibson, who competed in 16 U.S. Balloon National Championships, died early Thursday of cancer diagnosed about 15 months ago. Services are pending with Rader Funeral Home in Longview.
"Yeah, he was one of those larger-than-life guys," fellow balloonist Jim Tachias said of Gibson, who founded his Powerhouse Productions to market futuristic jetpack flights and was a stuntman for Chuck Norris on "Walker, Texas Ranger" from 1993 to 2001.
